Background

Why two character counts?

Almost every platform limits text by characters — but they don’t all count the same way. In an SMS or an X post, spaces count. For translations and some web forms, the “pure” text length without spaces is what matters. That’s why the counter shows both values side by side at all times.

For everyday use we’ve built the most important limits in as presets: simply pick “X / Post”, “SMS”, “Meta description” or “Title tag” — the progress bar warns you early enough, before your text gets too long. That way you write meta descriptions that don’t get cut off and posts that safely stay within the limit.

Frequently asked questions about counting characters

Do spaces count as characters?
It depends on the purpose. That’s why we show both values separately: “Characters with spaces” (e.g. for SMS or social media posts) and “Characters without spaces” (e.g. for some form fields and translations).
Which limit applies to which platform?
X (Twitter) allows 280 characters, a classic SMS 160, a WhatsApp status 139. For SEO you should keep meta descriptions at about 155 and title tags at about 60 characters — you’ll find all limits in the “Character limit” dropdown.
How are special characters counted?
Every visible character counts individually — including accented letters, punctuation, emojis and symbols. An emoji made up of several code points counts as one character, just like most input fields treat it.
Is there a Word or Excel function for this?
In Word you’ll find the character count under “Review → Word Count”, in Google Docs under “Tools → Word count”. For everything else — such as with a limit warning — simply paste your text here.
